At Carlyle we stock only a limited number floor samples and raw materials, never mass producing any piece speculatively. Each piece is custom specified then built one-at-a-time by time tested methods and materials. We believe in making it properly the first time in anticipation of refurbishing the entire piece for this generation and the next. While much of todays furniture is being manufactured to occupy a future land fill Carlyle furniture is manufactured to occupy and service your future estate.
CAVEAT EMPTOR - BUYER BEWARE
DUE TO THE VAST REARRANGEMENT OF THE U.S FURNITURE MANUFACTURING AND RETAIL LANDSCAPE, IT IS OUR DUTY TO WARN YOU OF THE UNSCRUPULOUS PRACTICES BEING EMPLOYED BY SOME OF OUR COMPETITORS, U.S AND ABROAD - RETAILERS AND MANUFACTURERS. THESE ISSUES ARE OFTEN EITHER TOO PROFOUND AND/OR COMPLICATED FOR THE CASUAL SALESPERSON - CLIENT EXCHANGE. PLEASE READ ON.
VOCABULARY and SOURCE - Beware of sales “catch phrases”, like HARDWOOD. Apparently most every “retail” showroom will tell you that the piece in question is either
The confusing part is that anyone using “ENGINEERED HARDWOOD” is allowed to leave the “Engineered” part out of their sales demonstration and vocabulary, leading the consumer to believe that the piece is actually made from a “SOLID” hardwood, like solid ash, oak, or maple wood slats and board. Unfortunately, as an educated consumer these days you must be as specific as a legal engineer to get a meaningful answer from a retail salesperson. And even then the salesperson is either too unqualified, disinterested, or simply un or mis-informed as to the true nature of the products construction, liability, and future service. This usually leads to false and misleading information, the result of which is that you are left with a piece of furniture with no inherent or future value. Meaning it simply cannot be re-padded, recovered and/or serviced. Services we do provide for our own product as well as many other reputable, quality oriented brands. The other nuances concerning hardwoods and construction are endless. Dowels, corner blocks, webbing and springing, the kiln-dry process, the list goes on and on and on. Educate yourself by asking lots of questions. Read the fine print and between the lines when given a guarantee or warrantee. What is the guarantee against? For how long and for what? What is the company track record? Are they mass producers, expert mass merchants, specialty middlemen? Remember that mass producing manufacturers and retailers have lobbyists to petition for their allowed verbiage. Be aware.
“ENGINEERED” V.S “SOLID” HARDWOOD - plain and simple “engineered hardwood” is nothing more than renamed and maybe refortified plywoods, compressed wood board, particle board, whatever! If it is combined with the bare minimum of some real hardwood they can call it hardwood.
SO WHATS THE BIG DEAL? Well, if you are buying a piece as an investment in your comfort, future and environment, that can be re-padded, reupholstered, serviced and maintained for generations to come the frame must be entirely made of SOLID & KILN DRIED HARDWOOD. Ceramic, plastic, and nylon staples are synonymous with plywood frames. Staples of this nature are usually barbed and cannot be properly extracted or even hammered down. These frames are not made to be redone in anyway, contrary to how they are sold. Adding dual purpose functionality like a sofa bed mechanism and mattress or speciality cushions like all “down over spring” seats require even more knowledge on the part of the salesperson and research by the client. Closely watch any manufacturers production videos and carefully read all sales brochures to determine if the manufacturer can actually deliver what the salesperson/retailer has promised. Often times they can not and you as a client are caught in the uncomfortable middle. Shop responsibly and do not be fooled by high-pressure salesmanship, slick sales gimmicks or just out-right lies. Common sense always prevails
